October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Heritage Dental Hygiene

At Heritage Dental Hygiene, we believe in the importance of holistic health and well-being. As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, we want to encourage our patients to take charge of their health by being proactive in their breast health screening.

Why Awareness Matters

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, and early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes. By promoting awareness and educating our patients, we hope to empower you to be vigilant about your breast health.

How to Check for Breast Cancer

Performing regular self-exams can help you become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, making it easier to detect any changes. Here’s a simple guide on how to perform a breast self-exam:

  1. Visual Inspection: Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in size, shape, or contour. Raise your arms and look for any changes again. Check for any skin dimpling, puckering, or redness.

  2. Palpation: While lying down, use your opposite hand to check each breast. Use the pads of your fingers and move in a circular motion, covering the entire breast area, from the collarbone to the abdomen and from armpit to armpit. Apply varying pressure to feel for lumps or abnormalities.

  3. In the Shower: Many find it easiest to check their breasts while showering. The soapy water helps your fingers glide over the skin, making it easier to feel for any lumps.

  4. Know Your Risk: Discuss your family history and any personal risk factors with your healthcare provider. They can guide you on the frequency of screenings and any additional measures you can take.

When to See a Doctor

If you notice any changes during your self-exam—such as a lump, discharge from the nipple, or any persistent changes—it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

At Heritage Dental Hygiene, we are committed to raising awareness and supporting our patients in their health journeys. We encourage everyone to take proactive steps towards maintaining their breast health. Together, we can spread awareness and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
